OTTAWA — On Tuesday, Marc‑André Morin, the NDP MP for Laurentides Labelle, spoke up in the House of Commons in favour of creating a National Philanthropy Day.
He made a statement in support of Bill S-201, which provides for the creation of a National Philanthropy Day, saying that it is high time that Canadian philanthropists and volunteers are recognized.
“These people give their time and energy to take care of those less fortunate, and they do so with tremendous dedication,” he said. “Granting them one day of recognition is the least we could do.”
He added that merely recognizing the day is not enough, and that the government must take concrete action. “If the children of unemployed workers who are not receiving benefits have something to eat, it is not thanks to the sensitivity of the Minister, for whom the penny dropped at the last minute, just in time to patch up her botched reform,” he said.
Morin recognized the exceptional work of more than 250 non-profit organizations working in the Antoine-Labelle RCM, reminding everyone that it is organizations such as La Manne du jour that help improve the well-being of men and women in the region.
